HOLY WORK

From the September 1957 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One of the holidays observed throughout the United States is called Labor Day. It is a day early in September which was dedicated originally to labor and is especially observed by many of the labor unions with parades and exercises. The selection of the September date is significant, since it is the time of year when schools are reopening, and many people are returning to their work after the summer holidays.

For the Christian Scientist, Labor Day should have a special significance, especially when one considers Christ Jesus' statement (John 6:27), "Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you." To some of his disciples who were fishermen, Jesus said when he called them to follow him that he would make them fishers of men. The meat to which Jesus referred is the great truth of spiritual being which he demonstrated. And it was with this truth that he and his disciples as fishers of men were to draw to them the sick, the sinning, the sorrowing, to become newborn of Spirit.

Christian Science teaches that all effective work must be based on the fact that man is not a mortal, a son of Adam, toiling daily by the sweat of his brow to earn a meager existence for himself and his family. We learn in Science that man is the son of God, the offspring of Soul, which constantly supplies its perfect ideas with unlimited faculties, gifts, and resources of good. And these great gifts are evidenced to us in daily life as we yield our limited views of creation to the actual understanding that we are heirs of God.
