"THE UNIVERSAL DAWN"

From the September 1957 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"To-day I pray that divine Love, the life-giving Principle of Christianity, shall speedily wake the long night of materialism, and the universal dawn shall break upon the spire of this temple." These words are part of an address written by Mary Baker Eddy and placed in the cornerstone of the original edifice of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. The address is found on pages 143 to 146 of Mrs. Eddy's "Miscellaneous Writings."

With the discovery of Christian Science, the light of real being dawned upon mankind. Existence separate from matter was understood; life in Spirit, ever present and indestructible, was revealed. What Christ Jesus had demonstrated as an individual is now available to all men. A new era is here, an era in which Christ is being understood as incorporeal Truth, an era in which the supremacy of Spirit is on its way to universal victory.

The dawn of the Science of Life was fresh evidence of the omnipresence of Deity. Through the previous centuries pure-minded men and women caught glimpses of the kingdom of heaven, which is everywhere. These humble individuals let the divine presence enter their thoughts and measurably control their lives. Their experiences became beacons in human history, reminding the world of the presence of a power which outmodes matter and its laws. Isaiah said prophetically (9:2), "The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined." The way of escape from the grasp of mortality is being pointed out to humanity through the revelation of Science. In this final revelation, the statement of Truth is complete. It remains for humanity to prove the facts that have been revealed.
