Much thought is being given today to the matter of discipline, and considerable emphasis is placed on the development of self-discipline. Let us examine these terms in the light of Christian Science.
In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy defines God as follows (p. 587): "The great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence."
In Christian Science, we learn that the basis for true discipline is an understanding of God. As we become true disciples, we demonstrate self-discipline. A dictionary defines "discipline" as "submissiveness to control." God is All; therefore the universe, including man, is under the control of the one omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient God. Divine control is all-powerful, everywhere present; man is submissive to divine wisdom. These truths leave no place for lack of self-discipline to creep into thought through material sense or human will.
