Throughout the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy tells her readers that the only real life and being is separate from that which we behold as a material existence. Again and again, Mrs. Eddy presents as the only reality perfect, infinite Spirit, God, and His perfect, spiritual universe, including perfect, spiritual man. One succinct statement appears on page 14, where she says, "Entirely separate from the belief and dream of material living, is the Life divine, revealing spiritual understanding and the consciousness of man's dominion over the whole earth."
Our Leader's authority for the revelation of the truth of perfect God and perfect man comes from the Bible. The Bible also contains many terms or synonyms for God. For example, in (John 4:24), "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."
Throughout the Bible, God is presented as the source of all intelligence, of all real being, of all law. Thus Christian Science defines Him not only as Life, Truth, Love, and Spirit, but as Mind, Soul, Principle, as the cause and creator of all that really is. The study and understanding of these terms for God reveal that He is not a mighty, manlike figure in a far-off heaven but infinite Spirit, ever present, all-powerful, and infinitely loving.
