DEFEATING MONOTONY

From the June 1959 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Every alert student of Christian Science is aware that if he has a sense of monotony in connection with his affairs, he needs to meet the condition within his own thinking; for it is primarily his own concept of his affairs that needs to be changed. Sometimes evil suggestions or wrong thoughts are allowed to shadow the highest and purest desires and ideals, thereby robbing the student of inspiration and joy and leaving in their place weariness and discouragement. Then is there need for him to awake and seeing the suggestions that are fretting thought for what they are, namely lies, to reverse them and destroy them.

The word "monotonous" is derived from the Greek monotonos, meaning "single tone." One dictionary definition of "monotonous" is, "Without change or variety; wearisomely uniform." Monotony, as a belief, is world-wide, conjuring up suggestions of routine, dullness, sameness, repetition, lack of progress. When accepted, these thoughts bring in their train apathy, weariness, discontent, disappointment, frustration. Deluding themselves as to the origin of their troubles, which are in so-called mortal mind, men seek as a way of escape diversion in false appetites, dissipation, or constant movement to and from places.

Divine Mind's purposeful activity is the only activity that is really going on anywhere or at any time, for Mind is God, the All-in-all. Mind acts positively and is single in purpose and motive, for there is no dualism in divine Mind. Mind's resources are varied and infinite, without limits or bounds. Mind is inspirational and spontaneous in revealing itself, and one who realizes this knows no drudgery or weariness. Mind is forever explaining itself, unfolding to the waiting thought freshness and variety from a boundless source.
