THE HOLY GHOST

From the June 1959 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the New Testament one finds many allusions to the Holy Ghost, the divine Spirit. This implies a development of spirituality which came to human thought with the life and teachings of Christ Jesus. The spirit and power of the Christ appeared more vividly with the Master than it had with the patriarchs and prophets of Old Testament times. Through Jesus the illumination of the Christ, God's divine idea, purified and healed multitudes. It brought the comfort of God's love to suffering humanity. It acted with both tenderness and might. It destroyed the chaff of false mentality, the carnal mind. It unfolded the presence and eternality of God as Love.

On the eve of his crucifixion Jesus said to his disciples, to whom he was to entrust his beloved mission (John 14:16, 17), "I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth." And he further described the Comforter as the Holy Ghost, which would teach men all things. Plainly, a further unfoldment of the Christ, Truth, was destined to come to the world. On the Day of Pentecost the illumination of the Holy Ghost was so brilliant that it appeared to the apostles as tongues of fire. Today spiritual illumination accompanies the appearing of Christian Science, and those who are ready to receive it feel the transforming power of the Holy Ghost.

Mary Baker Eddy throws light on the meaning of the Holy Ghost in Science and Health (p. 588): "Holy Ghost. Divine Science; the development of eternal Life, Truth, and Love."
