THE SUSTAINING POWER OF SPIRIT

From the June 1961 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Among the basic and far-reaching facts of Christian Science is this: that Spirit, God, always sustains Life and that matter never does. Mrs. Eddy writes (Science and Health, p. 531): "Is Life sustained by matter or by Spirit? Certainly not by both, since flesh wars against Spirit and the corporeal senses can take no cognizance of Spirit."

Man needs and has only Spirit for his Life, for Spirit possesses the essential qualities of Life, which man reflects. Thus man never needs matter to support, define, or express his being. The scientific understanding of this fact as true now, not merely in a so-called future state, equips one to deal effectively with discordant situations. From this purely spiritual standpoint of Life and identity, one can destroy, unsee, the false claim of the corporeal senses that matter can create or control life. Thus one can prove that Spirit is ever present and all-powerful, defines all being, and governs every effect.

One of the most satisfying aspects of Christian Science is that its truths are absolute facts; that is, they cannot be qualified in any way and can have no exceptions attached to them. The facts of divine Science are not dependent upon time or upon the gradual awakening of so-called mortal man from the dream of mortality.
