Jesus told his followers, "These signs shall follow them that believe;... they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover" (Mark 16:17, 18). The Bible account adds that the disciples "went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following."
The "signs following" the understanding of the divine Word are always the conscious evidence that the Christ, Truth, destroys both disease and its false so-called symptoms. It is a generally accepted fact that the symptoms of disease are not the disease but an indication of it. It is not the intent of any method of cure merely to remove symptoms of physical discord. But this is not always realized. We sometimes hear the following: "Oh, if I could only get rid of this pain," or "this discomfort," or "this bothersome condition!" But of far greater importance should be the desire to destroy in human sense the root of the trouble.
The general belief is that germs, viruses, chemical disturbances, malfunctions, or injuries underlie the symptoms of many human ailments. But Christian Science teaches and proves that any material evidence of bodily malfunction or suffering is in itself but a symptom of a basic mental trouble.
