"BE NOT AFRAID"

From the January 1963 issue of The Christian Science Journal

According to the teachings of Christian Science, the man of God's creating is not a material biped, nor is God's universe made up of material elements. Christian Science teaches that the true universe, including man, is the expression of God, Spirit, and is therefore spiritual; that God maintains His expression in perfect peace and harmony. For this reason there is in reality nothing to be afraid of and no mortal to be afraid.

Jesus always assured men of God's loving care. At the time of his transfiguration, at the height of a storm, and at the death of the ruler's daughter, he said with authority, "Be not afraid" (Matt. 17:7). And at the moment of comforting his disciples because of his imminent departure, he said (John 14:27), "Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."

With no worldly possessions, practically friendless, without visible means of supply, soon to be deserted by those who had professed to love him, and foreseeing a brutal execution, how could Jesus leave his peace with his followers and lovingly counsel them not to be afraid? The answer to this question is indicated in his reply to the threats of Pilate (John 19:11), "Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above."
