Over a period of many years a devout student of Christian Science noticed that at public gatherings in the United States, especially those connected with the public schools, the audience was often asked to rise and give the pledge of allegiance to the flag. One day while reading "No and Yes" by Mrs. Eddy, she found these words on page 46: "And 'Lo, I am with you alway,' is the pledge of the Master." This reminded her of God's holy pledge to Joshua (Josh. 1:5), "I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee." As she prayerfully contemplated the thought of the pledge, she found herself pledging her allegiance to God spontaneously and freely, promising to serve Him, His healing Christ, and the Cause of Christian Science established by Mrs. Eddy, His chosen scribe. She declared her unwillingness to serve any other cause or power, since her purpose was to manifest God and nothing else. She dedicated her life to the Cause of Christian Science as a living stone in the Church of Christ, Scientist.
God is not partial. His love is universal, including and embracing all men individually and collectively. Through the Christ, He has revealed how men may glorify Him in the body and in the spirit. Blessed are they who sincerely love God, for this devotion is known to Him, and He responds to the individual's sincere pledge of allegiance to Him in a way that the individual understands. He responded to Jesus' prayer (John 12:28), "Father, glorify thy name," with these words: "I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again."
In countless spiritual ways God lets us know that He loves us. The responses of divine Love to loyalty, sincerity, and reverent devotion are continually imparted today to sincere students as they were in Biblical days. His response was definitely shown to this student of Christian Science, for early one morning just as she had finished pledging her allegiance to God in prayerful devotion, the word "Hosea," followed by the numbers 2:18, 19, came to her thought again and again.
