THE ETHICS OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

From the January 1963 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Every mode of human effort to bring about good results conforms to certain ethics, certain moral fundamentals that exalt the ideal ends of human action. Christian Science, the system of Mind-healing established by Mrs. Eddy, sets forth clearly the morale of Christian healing as inaugurated by Christ Jesus. Only as its ethics are understood and fulfilled can the full fruitage of Christian Mind-healing be realized.

In healing the sick, the ethics of Christian Science make it impossible for a Christian Science practitioner and a medical doctor to coordinate their healing efforts. Such action would be ethically and practically unsound because the two would be working from opposite standpoints. One would render the other ineffective to the detriment of the patient.

Christian Science and materia medica approach disease differently. Christian Science associates disease wholly with what it calls mortal mind, while materia medica associates disease largely with processes of nature, of which matter is the supposed substance. Christian Science considers disease to be mental, materially mental. It states that a diseased condition of the body seems to be such only because mortal mind and mortal body are one.
