"Prepare ye the way"

From the October 1966 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The ringing words of the prophet have come down through the ages, "Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God."Isa. 40:3;These words have important meaning in Christian Science, where spiritual preparation is recognized as requisite for every fresh revelation of Christ, Truth. Since a Christian Science lecture always offers opportunity for higher unfoldment, let us consider how a church membership may prepare for a lecture.

The Bible records an instance wherein Christ Jesus' disciples were confronted with the need to prepare for a repast. We read in Mark's Gospel that the Master instructed two of his disciples to find a certain dwelling where they were to say to the owner of the house, "The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?" And Jesus added, "He will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us."Mark 14:14, 15;

Mrs. Eddy refers to this directive in a letter to the Annual Meeting of The Mother Church, January 6, 1905. She says, "In obedience to this command may these communicants come with the upper chambers of thought prepared for the reception of Truth—with hope, faith, and love ready to partake of the bread that cometh down from heaven, and to 'drink of his blood'—to receive into their affections and lives the inspiration which giveth victory over sin, disease, and death."The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 156;
