As a boy, I learned of Christian Science from my mother. She talked to me about it, and although I feel now the groundwork was laid at that time, I did not study or follow its teachings as I grew to manhood. I could remember, however, that through Christian Science my mother's health was greatly improved and during adversities she maintained a happy outlook.
It was not until years later, when in the depths, that a dear aunt suggested I have Christian Science treatment. Through strain, worry, discord, and a belief in my inability to progress, I had a light stroke, which left a side of my face and body somewhat paralyzed. Due to this condition and state of thought, I was not able to hold a satisfactory job. This resulted in severe financial trouble. During this period an inner growth had formed. I had been in the hospital, consulted with doctors, and tried chiropractic treatment to no avail. As I was physically ill, without funds, mentally despondent, and ready to give up, I consented to see a Christian Science practitioner. I began to study regularly and attend church services and lectures. Although there was gradual improvement physically and mentally, there were yet some deep waters ahead.
Christian Science practitioners treated me at intervals during this time; but it was not until five years later, when in a Christian Science Reading Room, that I gained my release, almost at once. I had been studying the Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly for that week. It was entitled "Mortals and Immortals" and in praying I claimed my being as coexistent and coeternal with divine Spirit. I read and pondered the statement in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (pp. 260, 261): "If we look to the body for pleasure, we find pain; for Life, we find death; for Truth, we find error; for Spirit, we find its opposite, matter. Now reverse this action. Look away from the body into Truth and Love, the Principle of all happiness, harmony, and immortality."
