One morning I wakened not feeling too well, but I thought I would be able to complete my day's work, and so went to work as usual. Since at noontime I was quite uncomfortable, I felt that the best thing to do would be to go home and do some studying. My thought at this time was to study the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, enough to bring comfort until I could get an appointment with a medical doctor. Although we had had some experience with Christian Science at this time, we still relied on medicine for healing.
After driving the thirty miles from my work to my home, I called the doctor for an appointment. He could not see me until the next day. I started reading at random from Science and Health. The pain in my chest grew worse, and I spent a sleepless night. My appointment with the doctor was for one in the afternoon, but by midmorning I was so uncomfortable that I felt I needed immediate attention. This passage from Matthew came to me (6:24): "No man can serve two masters," and I was led to place all reliance on God for healing. I called the doctor's office, canceled the appointment, and then called a Christian Science practitioner listed in the Journal. She started work immediately, and within an hour I was free.
I am very grateful to have learned from this experience that when we place complete reliance on God for healing we are never left wanting. Also at this time I was healed of the cigarette habit of ten years' standing. It was nearly two weeks before I became completely aware of the fact that I had stopped smoking. Neither the desire to smoke nor the other problem and its symptoms has ever returned.
