Christian Science came into my family's life when we were very much in need of it. We were living in a far-western state about sixteen hundred miles from most of our relatives. My wife's failing health was of great concern to us. She was taking strong sedatives, plus shots and aspirin. My mother always saw to it that we had a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy in our home, although we did not read it.
One day, not knowing why I said it, I told my wife that if she wanted to get rid of this condition the reading of Science and Health would do it. I had never seen anyone healed from the reading of this book. She took my advice, and when I saw how rapidly she was being returned to a happy, healthy, harmonious condition, I decided I would start reading Science and Health along with my Bible. In a short while we made the decision to do away completely with all material medicines and go with God all the way. I will admit that we felt a little shaky at the start, since I had had seven surgical operations and my wife had had five. This decision was made about four and one half years ago, and it would be impossible to feel any more protected than we do today in our complete reliance upon God in Christian Science. We have had ample proof of His power to save.
After moving back to our original state, we built a home in the country. One day while in the city I received a call that our son had been seriously injured. I told my parents I was going to him alone and suggested that they read Science and Health. I was about twenty-six miles from him but as soon as I started praying I knew our Father-Mother God would answer my prayer. What time I wasn't praying, I was singing, "'Feed My Sheep,'" one of Mrs. Eddy's hymns in the Christian Science Hymnal. This includes the words (No. 304):
