Many proofs of God's care have benefited me for more than fifty years through the study and application of Christian Science. My testimony that appeared in the Sentinel before World War II told of my healing of asthma. I am glad to say that the healing was so complete that I went on active duty as an infantry officer, although asthma has been a condition the Army has listed as a reason for disqualification.
Upon my entering active duty, the routine physical examination showed I had pilonidal cysts. I asked a waiver, feeling I could do my job. But the medical appeal officer certified me back to inactive status. He said he had undergone surgery for the same condition but it had not healed. He explained that he could remain on active duty with the condition because he was not regarded as a combat officer. He wished me well in hearing I would have Christian Science treatment, because he said he could not recommend surgery.
My healing came after I read through the Bible and all the writings of Mrs. Eddy. I don't know just when the healing came, but absent treatment by my Christian Science teacher proved inspiring and effective. I applied for active duty, but the Army, officially thanking me as a matter of record, reported no further need for another lieutenant in the closing months of the war.
