My introduction to Christian Science came in 1942 through my marriage to a student of Christian Science, who had already experienced many beautiful healings through its application. I began to read and study Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy so that I might learn to understand his way of thinking, as it was very different from mine. While reading this book the first time, I had a healing of chronic constipation, which has been permanent. Somewhere along the way I became free of an annoying nasal drainage that had plagued me for quite a long time. Specific prayerful work was never taken up for this condition, but I continued to read and found myself wanting to learn more of God and my relationship to Him, and the healing came.
By the time our daughter was old enough to go to school I was sure that Christian Science was for me, and that I wanted to depend on it for healing and to raise our child with its help.
However, the habit of smoking prevented me from joining The Mother Church. (We did not have a branch church in our city.) My mother-in-law had asked me many times when I was going to give up cigarettes, and I would reply, "When joining The Mother Church is more important to me than cigarettes!"
