Over thirty years ago a friend gave me a pocket size copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. The first thing I learned was "the scientific statement of being," which states, among other good things, "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All in all" (p. 468). I attended church for many years because it gave me comfort, and then someone told me that if I'd read the Lesson Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly each morning the understanding of God I would gain from this study would enable me to help my husband in the office.
The organization for which my husband worked was going through a conversion centering in his section. He was doing everything humanly possible but seemed to be in deep trouble. I had a small Bible and the textbook, Science and Health, so I got up at five o'clock and read the lesson, because I was working and had to be in the office by seven, as this was in the tropics. At first I did not understand most of it and had a hard time finding the citations. However, progressively I gained a more established understanding of God's government in our affairs. Many years later when I told my husband why I had started reading the lesson, he said, "It worked, didn't it!"
The whole office picture changed for the better. We stayed six years longer than we thought we would, and during those years the retirement benefits improved unbelievably.
