It is vital to the welfare of every individual to understand the meaning of being a law to himself. In Christian Science one learns he can indeed be a law to himself, and as he demonstrates this standpoint, he is protected from sickness, sin, and the maliciousness of mortal mind. When Christ Jesus said to Pilate, "Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above,"John 19:11; Jesus was affirming the fact that he possessed the dominion that comes from being a law to oneself.
Just what does it mean to be a law to oneself? Christian Science explains that one is a law to himself to the extent that one understands and lives the truth of his identity as it is created in God's image and likeness. In Science, God is understood to be divine Love and the only true source of being. True selfhood embodies by reflection God's nature, and this nature includes the mighty forces of Spirit manifest in consciousness in qualities such as integrity, health, harmony, and well being. When spiritual identity is understood and expressed, the spiritual law of God comes into operation in human affairs and destroys sickness, sin, discord, and malice. True humility lies in recognizing genuine selfhood as the expression of God's being and bearing witness to it.
One becomes a law to himself when he understands that total dependence on God is the status of God's reflection. In human experience this understanding may be evidenced as a high degree of self-sufficiency. God maintains through His laws every element of true consciousness, and these elements embody the unchanging presence of good. The consciousness of this spiritual fact perpetuates health, happiness, and safety in our experience.
