There were two who went to Emmaus, hearts troubled,
doubtful, perplexed, behind them an empty
tomb gaping, around them fast gathering
shades of a darkening night.
There were three who arrived at Emmaus, and with
what comfort, what authority that third one spoke,
so tenderly chiding, so clearly expounding the
words of the prophets, till "their eyes were
opened, . . . and he vanished out of their sight."
There were two who came back from Emmaus, hurrying
through darkness, feet jubilant, voices
triumphant till, bursting in on that group
in Jerusalem, they joined the forever-
echoing joyous cry "The Lord is risen indeed!"
And on that glad morn
The daystar shone upon them
and the night was gone.
