Quoting Psalm 46:1, Mary Baker Eddy states (Science and Health, p. 444), "Step by step will those who trust Him find that 'God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.'" In my early adult life I did trust God and often turned to Him in prayer, especially when I felt the need of His help. I had heard of Christian Science and was curious, so when a copy of Science and Health was given me, I read it with interest.
Then came the Depression. I was unhappy with my way of life and longed for a change. I asked for leave from work to take an ocean voyage to Hawaii. On these beautiful islands I was content and wished to remain. Step by step . . . First, I was led to a small residential hotel, where I was happily situated and found congenial friends. Then, after mailing my office resignation, and shortly after applying at a local employment agency, supply was beautifully forthcoming. Later, in this office, I often heard Christian Science discussed. I began attending Sunday morning services and Wednesday evening testimony meetings in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. Many demonstrations and healings followed. Several stand out most vividly.
When I was very ill with what would probably be diagnosed as the flu, a Christian Science practitioner was called. I remember being made to see very clearly the absolute nothingness of the illness. This broke the mesmerism, and my recovery was rapid.
