When I was over twenty-eight years old, I heard of Christian Science for the first time. I couldn't read or write, as I had gone to school for only a few months. My husband and six children and I were always ill. One daughter suffered from asthma and rheumatism of the joints. Since she had reached the age of eleven and was unable to walk, the doctor said there was no hope.
Another daughter was nine years old. She had inflammation of the kidneys, and her body was swollen. The doctor said she could only eat certain foods. The youngest daughter was two. From the time she was three months old she had suffered from a stomach disorder that threatened her life.
I was unable to help myself, as I had a chronic illness. One day my husband came home with two copies of The Herald of Christian Science given him by a friend, but it seemed that everything was all over for me, since I couldn't read. With the help of my dear husband, who went to great trouble and read aloud, I one day had the desire to learn to read.
