At the age of six years I received my first healing in Christian Science. This took place on a passenger train en route to Portland, Oregon, from Houston, Texas, in 1919. I began coughing and could not stop. It was a case of croup. My mother, who knew of Christian Science, asked the conductor if he would see if there was a Christian Science practitioner in the car. He called out, and immediately a woman came forward from a few seats down the aisle and inquired what she could do. My mother asked her to treat me through prayer, which she agreed to do. Soon I stopped coughing, fell asleep, and woke healed, completely free. I sat up and enjoyed the rest of the trip.
In 1925, we took up the study of Christian Science. I made markers for the weekly Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly. Each day my mother and I looked forward to this holy hour of study. All this took place shortly after my mother wrote to the clerk of the branch Church of Christ, Scientist, fifty miles from our home, for literature, which was sent to us.
In 1929, I had a heart condition, and the doctor advised that I be taken out of school. The following day my mother came to me with a copy of the Journal and asked, "Do you want Christian Science treatment?" I answered, "Yes, yes!" She handed me the Journal, and I selected a practitioner from the list, and a letter was sent off that very day.
