"There is no stopping place in the middle"

The essential leap

From the April 1978 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To throw out mortal, material, limited viewpoints and mentally leap to the standpoint of perfection is essential in the practice of Christian Science. To avoid making the jump is to fail. "You can never demonstrate spirituality until you declare yourself to be immortal and understand that you are so," writes Mrs. Eddy. And she continues, "Christian Science is absolute; it is neither behind the point of perfection nor advancing towards it; it is at this point and must be practised therefrom." The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 242;

To human sense it seems ludicrous to claim that there is not a physical body in all God's universe; that there is no disease, nothing gone wrong now or ever; that there is no death; that there are no sinners, no haters, no stupid, no greedy, no hungry, no young or old. The spiritual fact remains, however: There is only God and His divinity—perfect, infinite, All. And we can realize this, because it is the simple, unavoidable truth—the magnificent reality for us all, right this moment and always.

In our spiritual knowing we need never apologize for being too absolute, but Christian Science isn't humanly reckless. Indeed, Jesus' sublime example of true Christliness shows how a quietly maintained view of spiritual perfection brings caring, healing, preserving attitudes toward mankind. The radical standpoint of beholding only the perfection of God's manifestation is really the only humanly practical way, because it alone permanently heals and blesses. To put it simply, this approach is demonstrable. If such a spiritually perfect view at first seems too idealistic to be practical, we might remember Mrs. Eddy's observation, "At present mortals progress slowly for fear of being thought ridiculous." Science and Health, p. 68; And the Bible calls us to "come out from among them, and be . . . separate." II Cor. 6:17;
