Testimonies of Healing

A student of Christian Science from...

From the November 1980 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A student of Christian Science from childhood, I recognize what a solid basis this study has provided for my life. It has taught me the importance of facing every situation with Christly grace and confidence in divine Truth. Any difficulty can be seen as an opportunity to correct one's thought—to rid it of mortal misconceptions by allowing infinite Love to govern. "Correct thought" became my theme when we were raising our three children. I found that as Love motivated my decisions and actions, I had the freedom to exercise my understanding of God's omnipotent law.

As a baby, our son suffered frequent earaches. My husband, who was not interested in Science, arranged for a doctor to treat the boy. But after many material remedies had been employed, the earaches persisted. One night when our son was in pain, my husband went to fill a prescription for him. Suddenly I realized how remiss I had been in not trusting completely in God's healing power at the outset. Now I turned to our heavenly Father in earnest, acknowledging the innate perfection of His child, forever enfolded in His loving care. A gentle assurance of divine Love's ever-presence released me from fear, and the youngster fell into a peaceful sleep. The prescription was never used, for our son was well, and there were no further earaches.

For some time I was annoyed by my husband's chain-smoking. Emptying his ashtrays was especially unpleasant. Finally I reasoned that as long as I saw someone else as a victim of a foul habit, I suffered too. I overcame my resentment by affirming that all of God's children are free and pure. This is the reality of being. At the time I was undergoing this change of viewpoint, my husband, who was away on a business trip, decided to quit smoking. After his return he experienced some withdrawal symptoms, but these quickly left when it became clear to both of us that all he had withdrawn from was the suggestion that man is subject to inharmony. Mrs. Eddy states in Science and Health (p. 157), "Christian Science exterminates the drug, and rests on Mind alone as the curative Principle, acknowledging that the divine Mind has all power."
