The sanctity of consciousness silences fear

From the November 1980 issue of The Christian Science Journal

If a rooster lays an egg on top of a steeple, which side will it roll down? This trick question often fools the unsuspecting. The more immersed we are in physical law, the more apt we are to get involved in figuring out factors such as wind, slope, and shape of egg. So engrossed, we miss the deception: roosters don't lay eggs!

Similarly, the carnal mind, a term for a supposititious mind opposed to God, induces fear through trick questions: "Is that sore getting smaller?" "How can I ever meet the right man/ woman?" "Will I find a home I can afford?" Anxiously looking to matter for an answer, we may be deceived into missing the important point: man is presently the healthy, complete, secure expression of God.

Fear is a red herring, which should alert us to return to the real issue. From the midst of mortal mind's misleading cackle we must remove to the sanctuary of spiritual sense—the pure consciousness of man's inseparability from God. Turning to the Bible and the writings of our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, helps us to do this.
