Testimonies of Healing

I myself did little praying until after...

From the August 1980 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I myself did little praying until after the responsibilities of marriage and children came into my life—although I am grateful for having attended the Christian Science Sunday School until I was twenty, and for having parents who helped me through prayer when difficulties arose. From early childhood my children were taught to pray for themselves. They have been healed quickly with the help of a Christian Science practitioner and through the truths we shared out loud from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, in cases of frostbite, burns, and deep wounds from broken glass. A daughter fell thirty feet from a tree without harm. "A grain of Christian Science does wonders for mortals, so omnipotent is Truth, but more of Christian Science must be gained in order to continue in well doing" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 449). How wonderful it is to see the grain become the bread of understanding through persistence, which brings growth and the ability to prove we are not mortals but the immortal children of God.

One outstanding healing occurred in 1974 when my son was on the hockey team in college, a thousand miles away from home. The school infirmary called and informed us that he had been hit near his eye by an extremely powerful stroke called a slap shot. The force of the blow had knocked him out for a few seconds, and then he was taken to the infirmary. He refused medication for the injury above his eye and simply had the nurse bandage it. They told him to return the next day to have the bandage changed and to allow the doctor to check his vision.

My son asked me to pray for him, as his vision was blurred, which I did. I was able to free myself from a false sense of responsibility by seeing the boy as God's child, not my own—loved and cared for by his Father-Mother.
