I rejoice that I had the opportunity to attend a Christian Science Sunday School from an early age. As a child, I was healed many times—sometimes through my own prayers and sometimes with the help of a Christian Science practitioner called by my parents. I was healed of severe earaches, fever, burns from scalding water, and headaches, so I knew that I could rely on God for my every need.
After I was married, though, and we had children, I sometimes had a hard time reassuring my husband that Christian Science could heal them. We both wanted the best for our daughters but disagreed about how to achieve it. In the years since, I have seen that difficult situations are basically opportunities to lean more fully upon God and to know that God is really caring for us all.
One time, as I was putting the baby to bed, the phone rang. While I was answering it, the children (four girls) began running through the house, playfully chasing each other. Suddenly I heard a loud crash and the cries of our five-year-old—she had slipped and hit her head on a piece of heavy furniture. When I got to her, it was apparent she had had a bad fall—there was quite a bit of blood. I sent the older girls to bed and picked up this child, reminding her that she was God's perfect child. I then decided to call a Christian Science practitioner to help my daughter and also to help me overcome fear.
