Christian Science in the academic community

From the January 1983 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Considering the absolute spiritual truths on which the healing practice of Christian Science is based, a casual observer might unwittingly conclude that this Science has no place in the academic community because: (1) one's understanding of Christian Science is not dependent on academic degrees; (2) material theories cannot be reconciled with spiritual facts; and (3) one cannot serve two masters simultaneously.

But let us not miss the central point. Christian Science comes to bless humanity, not to ignore it; to elevate it, not to silence it.

True, our understanding of this Science is independent of scholarly achievements. It is dependent on the spiritualization of our thoughts—our being educated out of, rather than into, material beliefs and sensualism. In Science and Health, which is the Christian Science textbook, Mrs. Eddy states, "Observation, invention, study, and original thought are expansive and should promote the growth of mortal mind out of itself, out of all that is mortal." Science and Health, p. 195. This textbook also tells us, "Truth, independent of doctrines and time-honored systems, knocks at the portal of humanity." Ibid., p. vii.
