I've always been grateful that my parents had the wisdom and the dedication to adhere to the precepts of Christian Science, because being raised in Christian Science made growing up a pleasure. My very early years were lived during the Depression of the thirties, but despite the high unemployment of that period, my dad always worked and brought home a steady income through his understanding and application of Christian Science. He knew that the source of supply was and is Spirit, God. Mrs. Eddy says in Miscellaneous Writings (p. 307): "God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies."
My childhood was free from the typical ailments of those days, except for a short bout with chicken pox, which was healed in just a couple of days with the help of a Christian Science practitioner. I'm grateful also for the divine guidance and protection I experienced during World War II, and for the fact that aside from some colds, minor headaches, and the like, which were quickly healed, my adult life has been free from physical problems. Mrs. Eddy states on page 369 of Science and Health: "The prophylactic and therapeutic (that is, the preventive and curative) arts belong emphatically to Christian Science, as would be readily seen, if psychology, or the Science of Spirit, God, was understood."
Recently, I had an opportunity to prove the preventive aspect of Science. We sold our house and went on a 35,000-mile camping trip that took us through thirty-eight of the United States, the eastern half of Canada, as far north as Quebec City, all of Mexico, and more than half of Guatemala, France, Spain, and Belgium. One of the things we were most grateful for was the fact that in all the driving, under all those different circumstances, we saw not one accident—not one. In fact, we didn't even experience so much as a flat tire! Outside of normal oil changes, and an occasional tune-up, the camper performed flawlessly.
