THE CHURCH IN ACTION

This Christmas Day

From the December 1983 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christmas Day this year, by a happy coincidence, comes on a Sunday. It seems opportune, then, to refresh our view of church activities as unveiling Christ, Truth, itself. Going to church or Sunday School can be the most joyful part of this Christmas Day, enriching all of its delights with the undimming gifts of Christ. Thus we will also be reminded how perfectly Christmas illustrates the mission of our churches.

The coming of Truth, through the example and teachings of Christ Jesus, is to be magnified here on earth until every heart knows that God is the Father-Mother of all. Each Christian Science church stands at the forefront of this mission. The subject of the Bible Lesson to be read in Churches of Christ, Scientist, on Christmas is "Christian Science." Included is this lovely verse from Luke: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." Luke 2:14. This passage from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy is also included: "To-day the healing power of Truth is widely demonstrated as an immanent, eternal Science, instead of a phenomenal exhibition. Its appearing is the coming anew of the gospel of 'on earth peace, good-will toward men.'" Science and Health, p. 150.

This Christmas lesson is a feast and a celebration to look forward to. An hour in church or Sunday School can help take the hectic out of the holidays, turn us to spiritual gifts, and help us welcome the Christ into our homes.
