Celebrating Christmas

From the December 1983 issue of The Christian Science Journal

As we approach the Christmas season, our hearts turn joyfully to the celebration of the birth of Christ Jesus to the Virgin-mother, Mary. We think of Christianity as beginning in the manger where Jesus was born. Yet the Christ goes back much farther than that. The Christ is as eternal as God.

The Christ is God's voice speaking to mankind—the divine influence that brings redemption, freedom, peace, joy, and health. Its activity is and always has been to awaken the world from the hypnotism of materiality to the actuality here and now of true spiritual being. The light of the Christ exposes and destroys sin and its effects.

This Christ, Truth, was discerned and demonstrated in some measure throughout Bible history. It was through the Christ that Moses and other holy men were able to teach the truth of God's nature and His will for man, and to accomplish acts considered miraculous.
