Even a momentary glimpse of the power of Truth awakens in the student of Christian Science a desire to learn more about God, man, and spiritual reality. As the student progresses, he yearns to dig still deeper into the teachings of Mary Baker Eddy and become more systematic and effective in his study and practice.
Christian Science class instruction is the unique avenue provided by our Leader to satisfy these spiritual aspirations and to so deepen the student's understanding of the rules of this Science that he is spiritually prepared to play a responsible role in bringing the blessings of Christian Science to all mankind. Mrs. Eddy states (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 317), "The hour has struck for Christian Scientists to do their own work; to appreciate the signs of the times; to demonstrate self-knowledge and self-government; and to demonstrate, as this period demands, over all sin, disease, and death." There could scarcely be a more concise summation of the purpose and the promise of class instruction.
The same divine Love that impelled our Leader to provide for such instruction can be trusted to bring together pupil and teacher at the right time, and in the right way. Mrs. Eddy sets forth the requirements and conditions for class teaching in her Manual of The Mother Church (Articles XXVI and XXVII) and elsewhere in her writings. Study of these references is useful in preparing thought for class. Readiness for instruction is not determined by age or years of study. What one most needs is a steadfast desire to learn more of Truth, and a receptive heart filled with honesty and goodness. Such a one will not hesitate to ask any authorized teacher for an opportunity to discuss class and what it involves. Both pupil and teacher will want to pray for guidance in considering this long-term relationship. Exploratory discussions are without obligation on either side. The guidance that results from honest prayer is clear and unerring and leads to fruition. In the words of Isaiah (30:20, 21): ". . . thine eyes shall see thy teachers: and thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left."
