Our chief cornerstone

From the February 1983 issue of The Christian Science Journal

On May 21, 1894, a small group of Christian Scientists gathered in quiet ceremony for the laying of a cornerstone. This event marked the erection of the edifice of The Mother Church, whose Founder, Mrs. Eddy, states: "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass., is designed to be built on the Rock, Christ; even the understanding and demonstration of divine Truth, Life, and Love, healing and saving the world from sin and death; thus to reflect in some degree the Church Universal and Triumphant."Manual of The Mother Church, p. 19.

The real cornerstone of The Mother Church, then, fundamental to its soundness and prosperity, is "the Rock, Christ." In Christian Science we learn of Christ as the activity of Truth, ever operative in the establishment of harmony, perfection, progress. This ever-active Christ is the true foundation of The Mother Church, its chief cornerstone.

If we are Christian Scientists, we have accepted this Christ as our cornerstone, the foundation for all true building. And we are evidencing the Christ-principle in individual healing.
