Hymns: uplifting thought to God

From the March 1984 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Through the centuries and in many countries the Christ message has been conveyed by hymns. Those studying Christian Science today often find in hymns the divine animus that inspires them to worship God in Spirit, not in matter. Not only does this spiritual illumination bring the grace to do God's will and to love Him most as we serve His Cause; it is also an effectual help in every aspect of our daily lives.

Sometimes the reading or singing of a hymn gives a feeling of closeness to God's love. Other times, some specific statement or phrase stands out, to be pondered and remembered. What was it that touched one's heart? The healing spirit in hymns is a deep trust in the power of God's goodness.

Comforting messages in hymns are, in actuality, the eternal good effect of the one eternally good cause, God. The Christ inspiration in hymns brings out the fact that there are no real opposites to the good that God is always giving, to the spiritual universe of His creating, or to our own real being—the imaging forth of the one Mind. This higher leading serves to wake us from the errors of physical sense to the spiritual sense of things and to the freedom we need.
