Heal thyself?

From the March 1984 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Yes, you! "But I don't know how. I've tried many times, but without any success at all. I've studied the Bible and our textbook, Science and Health, but haven't been able to effect a healing. I don't know why, but for some reason the understanding that heals eludes me."

Sound familiar? Let's get to the heart of the problem. The understanding that heals is not gained by scratching the surface and expecting to hit pay dirt. To reach that which is worthwhile requires consecrated effort. We must not get discouraged if our initial efforts are not successful. In our textbook Mrs. Eddy writes, "Step by step will those who trust Him find that 'God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.'" Science and Health, p. 444. Step by step we advance toward Truth, but if we give up easily, can we expect the reward?

What if you continue to study and search diligently, and still the healing doesn't come. Don't give up! Dig deeper within yourself, probe until you uncover the resistance to healing. Science and Health tells us: "Those who cannot demonstrate, at least in part, the divine Principle of the teachings and practice of our Master have no part in God. If living in disobedience to Him, we ought to feel no security, although God is good." Ibid., p. 19. Could this be the culprit? Are we living in disobedience to God's commandments? Are we so caught up in the pursuit of worldly possessions that we have no part in Him? Has God taken a back seat in our lives? Have we forgotten His first and great commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me"? Ex. 20:3. Has one of the gods of this world become our primary obsession? Is it possible we not only ignore God's great commandment but pay no heed to Christ Jesus' instruction "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you"? Matt. 6:33.
