Christ Jesus said (Matt. 6:24):"No man can serve two masters .... Ye cannot serve God and mammon." How grateful I am for a recent healing through Christian Science that helped me gain a deeper understanding of this Scriptural admonition.
One Friday night I had some minor abdominal discomfort. The next morning I got up feeling fine but then began to have severe, stabbing pain in the same area. Being quite alarmed, I called a Christian Science practitioner for prayerful help. The truths he shared with me were encouraging. I lay down on the bed, considering them, when almost immediately the pain became intense. It was at this time that the thought of dying crossed my mind and I considered calling an ambulance. Yet at the same time, the verse from Matthew quoted above also came to me, making me realize that oscillating between relying on God and dreading the physical symptoms was aggravating the fear. Right then I mentally said "no" to the thought of calling an ambulance.
Since I was still unable to move, I asked my wife to call the practitioner again. When she did, the practitioner asked her to have me come to the telephone. I guess this was what I needed to begin breaking the mesmerism, because I was able to work my way over to the phone. I don't remember what the practitioner said, but it must have been effective, because immediately after I returned to bed, the pain began to subside. Within an hour I was up and about and able to call back the practitioner with the good news. I was also able to carry out all my church and work duties the following week without any problems, despite there still being some internal discomfort.
