"Like as a mother, God comforteth His children" (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 174). What a boon to parents is this promise, echoing Isaiah 66:13. It is a wonderful healing message of Truth for us today. I feel that without this understanding of God's dependable loving care for His children, human parenthood would seem a frightening responsibility. I never cease to be grateful that my husband and I had the happy experience of being raised in Christian Science ourselves. As we had both gained a conviction of the effectiveness of Christianly scientific prayer to meet every human need, it was natural for us to rely on God completely in caring for our own children.
I would like to tell of two experiences involving two of our children in which the effects of accidents were completely eradicated through spiritual means alone. On page 424 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy explains how this was possible. She writes: "Accidents are unknown to God, or immortal Mind, and we must leave the mortal basis of belief and unite with the one Mind, in order to change the notion of chance to the proper sense of God's unerring direction and thus bring out harmony."
The first experience was the healing of a son, when he was about three. One day, unknown to me, he placed his little hand in an outside hinge of our old-fashioned refrigerator after I had opened it. You can imagine my distress, after slamming the door shut, to find that it had closed on the child's hand. I picked him up and immediately reached out in an earnest, prayerful appeal to God for help. Above the child's screams, I repeated with conviction the first lines of "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468):"There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all."
