Smile on the outside and pray on the inside

From the September 1985 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Anyone can smile when things are going well. But what about those other times—the rocky roads, the recessions, the unexpected crises? How we meet the challenges that come is a measure of our true spirituality, of our willingness and ability to follow the example of the master Christian, Christ Jesus.

Although Jesus had to face daily the severe needs of mankind, he never complained about the personal challenges he had to meet in fulfillment of his divine mission. He so fully epitomized his own declaration "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work,"John 5:17. that he didn't quail in the face of evil but demonstrated his spiritually derived dominion over it.

Jesus' demeanor during his own personal struggles invites us to look deeply into our own conduct during periods of great stress or turmoil. How gracefully do we carry out our daily responsibilities at such times? Would an observer know we are Christian Scientists by the way in which we conduct ourselves?
