Keeping our promise

From the November 1986 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When joining The Mother Church, each applicant signifies that he subscribes to the Tenets and Rules of the Church, as set down by Mrs. Eddy.See Manual of The Mother Church, pp. 114-119. The last tenet, the sixth, reads: "And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and to be merciful, just, and pure." Ibid., p. 16.

These are spiritual demands, divine requirements. By meeting them, by performing the actions this promise specifies, we demonstrate genuine Christian Science and further the healing mission of the Church of Christ, Scientist.

The sixth tenet is a fourfold promise. The first two parts relate to us, and the last two to our actions and attitudes toward others. Let's consider how the fulfillment of each part of this promise develops us as individual Christian Scientists and thereby strengthens our Church.
