Reading aloud—with understanding

From the November 1986 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Most of us have the opportunity to read aloud from the Bible and from Mrs. Eddy's writings in our study and practice of Christian Science. Some read aloud in church committee or membership meetings or to someone seeking comfort. Others serve in the office of Reader for their branch Church of Christ, Scientist.

When I was elected to serve as Reader at a branch church, I had several impediments that needed to be healed. Among other things, I habitually stuttered. How could I read aloud if an inability to communicate effectively made me hesitate to speak? Clearly, I needed to take both metaphysical and human steps in order to read aloud understandingly.

First, I prayed to see that when I spoke or read the Word of God that my approach was in line with what Christ Jesus intended for his disciples: "For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you." Matt. 10:20. In divine communication God's Word imparts itself. I endeavored to understand and demonstrate Mrs. Eddy's statement "The intercommunication is always from God to His idea, man." Science and Health, p. 284.
