Human perfectionism or spiritual perfection?

From the January 1987 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace. (Psalms 37:37)

Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. (Matthew 5:48)

I used to read these two passages from the Bible and absolutely cringe. Being perfect, in my estimation, called for cruel, unjust, laborious, and painstaking work that could produce little, if any, lasting satisfaction or joy. The very concept of peace eluded me.
