"The entire education of children should be such as to form habits of obedience to the moral and spiritual law, with which the child can meet and master the belief in so-called physical laws, a belief which breeds disease" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 62). This statement from the Christian Science textbook supported a decision made many years ago by my husband and me to accept the headship of a school which was being started for boys from Christian Scientist families. We had only recently begun the study of Science and were eager to practice its teachings in the field of education. (My husband was already experienced as headmaster of a large boarding school.) Our accepting this new post meant a very considerable drop in salary, as well as renunciation of our home. However, we felt led to accept and were confident that we were under God's direction and care.
Nine boys were already enrolled, and our first task was to find a home for the school. There was very little money available, but when we found a suitable property, the price asked was exactly the sum at hand.
We worked with the following passage about the birth of a spiritual idea on page 463 of Science and Health in praying about this new venture: "Its beginning will be meek, its growth sturdy, and its maturity undecaying." We were blessed with a staff who were not only well-qualified schoolteachers but were also dedicated students of Christian Science, all sharing the ideals of the school.
