Testimonies of Healing

From early childhood I was raised in a Protestant...

From the December 1989 issue of The Christian Science Journal

From early childhood I was raised in a Protestant church. Its teachings encouraged the development of moral character and a knowledge of God as a God of love, for which I am most grateful. But these teachings never fully satisfied my longing to find answers to questions such as "If God is 'of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity' (Habakkuk) where did evil come from, and why are good people subject to sin, sickness, disease, and lack?"

I was brought up in a musical family and began a career in singing. An answer to my prayers to have a better understanding of God came when my voice teacher suggested that I audition for a solo position which was open in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. To my delight, I was chosen to be their regular soloist. After I had sung in just two services, it became clear to me that Christian Science was what I had been longing for. I saw how logically its teachings could be applied to our everyday needs. Science came as a wonderful burst of light that filled my heart with hope and joy.

I was actually excited to learn that there is one Mind, or divine source of intelligence, and that evil is essentially unreal because of the allness of God, good. I started studying the Bible Lessons to gain a better understanding of God and of man's true relationship to Him. Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy states, "The Christian Scientist has enlisted to lessen evil, disease, and death; and he will overcome them by understanding their nothingness and the allness of God, or good." I desired to become a Christian Scientist and to prove "the nothingness of evil and the allness of God" in my daily experience.
