Bible Notes

Related to the Lesson-Sermons for February 1990

From the January 1990 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Each Lesson-Sermon published in the Christian Science Quarterly—Bible Lessons is designed to be complete in itself. Its Bible references (King James ' Version) are corroborated and explained by passages from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. These Bible Notes are offered by The Christian Science Journal as indications of the possibilities for individual research. © 1989 The Christian Science Publishing Society. All rights reserved. ...

I taught Ephraim also to go, taking them by their arms (Hos. 11:3)

Ephraim, originally the name of one of Joseph's sons, became an important tribe in central Palestine during Israel's early development. It eventually became a synonym for Israel itself and is used that way in Hosea. The last phrase is understood by many to mean "took them up in my arms," as rendered by the Revised Standard Version (RSV).
