He knew that he had to leave them. Assuring his disciples that they could go forward to do the works that he had shown and taught them, Jesus prophesied that his Father would send the "Spirit of truth," the Comforter. See John 14:12-26. It would teach them whatever they needed to know and would be their advocate, or helper. This prophecy of divine advocacy is fulfilled whenever individuals rely on God for healing sickness as well as sin and for overcoming the fear of death.
In striving to practice the Science of Christianity as taught by Christ Jesus we are his present-day disciples. God impels our mission, strengthens us, and protects our spiritual growth. I've often thought that it must have taken immense courage and spiritual strength for the early disciples to obey their Master and fulfill their calling as his followers. When I began to feel this call to Christian discipleship and began to respond, I found great encouragement in the writings of the New Testament.
Often a totally new perspective on our individual mission as healers becomes apparent as a natural result of healing. Because the work of Christian healing deepens our understanding of God, it also gives us the spiritual strength to go forward and demonstrate more consistently what we've learned. I had an experience of this nature a few years ago.
