Christian Science heals. At the age of fifteen I became ill with tuberculosis. I was under the care of three different doctors for a period of fourteen months, yet my condition continued to worsen. X-rays showed both lungs heavily infected. Two relatives had already passed on with this disease, and I was fearful.
There were two families living in our neighborhood who were Christian Scientists. They visited me and my parents several times during my illness and told us of the healing power of God as understood in Christian Science. Although I knew that Christ Jesus and his disciples and the early Christians had healed by spiritual means, I was afraid to give up material medicine. Finally, when I had become so weak that I could not lift my head from my pillow, I decided to try Science.
A Christian Science practitioner was called to help me. A copy of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, was given to us for studying with our King James Version of the Bible. I was hardly conscious, but my mother sat by my bed and read to me by the hour. Now and then I would glimpse something of interest.
