From the January 1991 issue of The Christian Science Journal

With a heart full of gratitude I am sharing my testimony with you. Although I knew almost nothing of Christian Science, it saved me at a very critical moment during a period of illness.

As a small child I had always enjoyed good health. In 1979 I suddenly fell ill. I had a very high fever, accompanied by heart palpitations and other difficulties which almost ended my life. The next day I had an appointment with the only doctor in the area. He told me that I was lucky to be still alive, and he prescribed some pills for me. After I'd taken about half of them, the situation became worse. So I went to consult a local person who practiced traditional cures; but there was no change. Just at the point that I didn't know what else to do, these words from Psalms rang out in my memory: "Be still, and know that I am God."

In the area of Bas-Zaire where I lived, I had a new Christian Scientist friend, and when I visited him I noticed two books on his table: The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy. When I opened Science and Health to the first page, my thought was awakened by this truth: "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love."
