Light your candle! Cast off your bushel!

From the April 1993 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Quite obviously, if a person went around with a bushel basket on his head, the world would seem pretty dark! But who would do such a thing?

It may be a twist on Christ Jesus' intended message to think of a person putting a basket over his or her head, but that's a picture that has presented itself to my thought. Of course, when Jesus said, "Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house," he was talking about his followers being "the light of the world," Matt. 5:14, 15. and that we shouldn't hide that light, because it is so badly needed to brighten the world with Christly love and healing. But perhaps you have noticed how dark the world can seem these days; even if your own personal world is bright (and for many individuals it is not), you cannot escape the news—wars, troubled families, addiction, crime, all sorts of health problems, homelessness, and starvation, to name just a few of the dark corners of human experience—evidence of the world's need for spiritual light.

Do you feel "in the dark" as to how to help bring spiritual light and healing into the world? In proportion as you cast off mortal belief— disown it, discard it, abandon it—you will see God and His creation as they truly are.
