The prospect of teaching a Christian Science Sunday School class is wonderful. Yet actually facing the class can at times be daunting. With children sometimes falling off their chairs, kicking each other under the table, or yawning because they were out late the night before, we may feel tempted to believe that Sunday School teaching is not for us! Yet our hearts yearn to share the spiritual truths of God and man with these children and to help them see how to apply these truths in their daily experiences. And we know how much the children need them as they face the materialism of these times. How, then, do we bridge this gap between wanting to teach and feeling unable?
Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, gives us direction in this statement in Science and Health: "Desire is prayer; and no loss can occur from trusting God with our desires, that they may be moulded and exalted before they take form in words and in deeds." Science and Health, p. 1. When we are desiring to do a good thing, such as teaching Sunday School, we can trust that desire to God. When we listen and yield to Him in this way, we will be directed to know how to help the children.
It's useful first to be consistent in recognizing that we are actually all children of God, precious offspring of Spirit. God's creation is not one of human, or mortal, men, women, and ... children, but one of immortal, spiritual ideas. The limited, material sense of man is not truly man at all but a distorted or inverted view of God's offspring. It would present man as born into matter, of material parentage, with a finite personality and a brain of limited capacity.
